Day 6

1/4/19
Today was eventful with the highlight coming from the Belize Zoo. We woke up and had breakfast at 8am on the patio outside of the hotel looking down at the beautiful town of San Ignacio.  Afterwards, we left the hotel and road in the van for two hours toward the Belize Zoo in Democracia. The zoo is a place where either the animals were born there, the animals were left there, or the zoo was their only hope for survival. When we arrived at the zoo, we were greeted with boa constrictor in which we each had the opportunity to hold. We were fortunate for our driver to have a lot of knowledge of the animals within the zoo so he gave us a personal tour around the zoo. We were given the opportunity to feed the tapirs carrots; a tapir is the national animal of Belize.

Afterward, we ate lunch at Cheers Restaurant where the students and professor signed their names on a t-shirt that which had the name of the student organization, Students for Global Communication. We gave the shirt to one of the servers for her to hang it up with the other signed shirts. Next, we drove another hour to Belize City where we took the water taxi to Caye Caulker, one of the islands off the coast of Belize. When we arrived at the dock to take the water taxi, it was very overwhelming because the area was crowded, and we were unsure where to go. The water taxi was completely full of people; there were some people standing in up in the back. We got settled into our rooms at the Barefoot Hotel and walked around the streets before heading to Enjoy Restaurant and Bar for dinner. Many of us were upset when we found out there was a limited to the amount of options of food we could choose from. However, when we got it all straightened out, the food turned out delicious. Then we returned to the hotel to get ready for bed and prepare for the snorkeling adventure we would have the next morning.
